Trip to Centralia, PA (summer 2001)
Centralia is a town (or once was a town) in central Pennsylvania. It was a typical coal mining town until the mid-60's when a fire in the town dump caught the coal seam on fire, which runs underneath the center of town. Though there have been several attempts to control this underground fire there has been no way to extinguish it to this day. It is expected that the fire will continue to burn until there is no more coal to consume. Today only a few buildings remain from this once thriving coal town, the city has been condemned and most of the structures have been razed. The following pictures are of what remains in Centralia.
Both of these pictures are of an abandoned section of State Road 61.
Here can be seen massive amounts of ground deformation, and open riffs and steam
which lead down into the coal fires.

of someone's front porch
2) Portions of burned earth that been burn from the inside
1) This is all that remains of the two major
intersecting roads of downtown Centralia, a park like setup created by the few
remaining residents. The heart sign says "We Love Centralia".
